China Commits $130 Million in Assistance to Drive Maldives’ Development

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has shared news of a substantial aid package from China, amounting to USD 130 million in free aid. This announcement followed the President’s inaugural state visit to China, where he was invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping. The visit solidified the growing connection between the Maldives and China, resulting in a significant financial commitment, primarily directed towards infrastructure and economic development.

During his visit, President Muizzu explored various free trade zones in Xiamen, emphasizing their role in economic stimulation. This exploration aimed to adopt successful models from China to bolster the Maldivian economy. The President also participated in the Investment Maldives forum in Fuzhou, a gathering of over 300 Chinese companies. Described as the largest and most successful investment forum to date, it facilitated substantial business and investment opportunities involving both Maldivian and Chinese government and private entities.

China’s aid package will be directed towards several sectors, including the fishing industry, digital economy improvements, and the growth of public service media. A significant portion of the funds will be allocated to address crucial infrastructure needs, such as road construction in cities. The educational sector will benefit from 1,000 fully funded scholarships for Maldivian civil servants in human resource development. Agriculture, banking, tourism, and social housing projects are also focal points of this comprehensive aid package.

An important aspect of the agreement is the establishment of a sister city relationship between Fuzhou and Male’ City, fostering closer cultural and economic ties. Plans for renewable energy investments, the construction of a tertiary hospital, and the development of a commercial district in Hulhumale’s second phase further highlight the diverse nature of this collaboration.

President Muizzu’s visit resulted in agreements spanning sports, shore protection, waste management, and essential infrastructure development like electricity, water, and road construction.

In his closing remarks, President Muizzu highlighted the strong relationship between China and the Maldives. This recent aid package and series of agreements mark a significant milestone in the Maldives-China relationship, ushering in a new era of cooperation and mutual growth.
