The China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) has put forward a plan to build 15,000 homes in Rasmale, as revealed in a press conference at the President’s Office.
Policy Secretary Abdulla Nazim shared during the press conference that CSCEC, a major Chinese construction company, has shown interest in this large-scale project. This proposal is part of the Maldivian government’s broader initiative to develop 30,000 housing units in the area.
CSCEC has a history of involvement in Maldivian infrastructure projects, having previously worked on significant undertakings like the “Hiyaa” project and the development of waste transfer stations in Male and Villimale.
According to Nazim, the proposal is yet to undergo detailed negotiations regarding costs and quality, involving the Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development, as well as the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure.
Minister Haidar, in an interview with state media PSM, confirmed that the development of the 30,000 housing units would kick off simultaneously. The Rasmale project will also include essential services such as water and sewage systems, alongside road development.
Recognized as the largest housing initiative in the Maldives, the Rasmale project is expected to be completed within eight months. This ambitious timeline reflects the government’s dedication to addressing the housing needs in the region.
The agreement with China for this project marks a significant development in Maldives-China cooperation, indicating a strengthening of ties between the two nations, especially in the field of infrastructure development.
