S Hotels and Resorts, an international hospitality company affiliated with Singha Estate, recently entered into a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment & Energy in the Maldives. The aim is to actively contribute to the preservation of the nation’s natural environment, raise awareness about conservation, and support the marine biodiversity around CROSSROADS Maldives, covering an extensive area of 3.15km², which constitutes about 31% of the entire project size. This initiative falls under the Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) program.
The MoU, guided by the theme “Empower Minds, Foster Growth,” was formalized at a noteworthy ceremony hosted at CROSSROADS Maldives. Attendees included distinguished figures from the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment & Energy, such as Deputy Minister Hassan Mohamed, Permanent Secretary Ajwadh Mustafa, and Director Muhusina Abdul Rahman. Representatives from other ministries and S Hotels & Resorts’ leadership, including CEO Michael Marshall and marine scientist Dr. Thon Thamrongnawasawat, were also present. Additionally, 20 students from various schools across the Maldives participated in the event.
The agreement positions S Hotels & Resorts as a key partner in achieving common environmental goals, emphasizing knowledge-sharing, capacity building, and supporting OECMs—a conservation approach beyond officially designated protected zones.
Central to this collaboration is the Marine Discovery Centre at CROSSROADS Maldives, serving as an innovative environmental and educational hub. It houses a state-of-the-art laboratory and spearheads essential projects like coral propagation, breeding programs for endangered species, and the Maldives Discovery Centre, dedicated to preserving the rich history, culture, and arts of the Maldivian people.
Education stands out as a crucial aspect of the MoU, and the 20 students who attended the ceremony had the opportunity to visit these pioneering conservation and heritage centers. The program officially launched with insights into coral restoration, biodiversity, and culture. Future campaigns aim to disseminate knowledge across diverse age groups and social backgrounds, fostering a better understanding of the ecosystem and community interactions.
This collaboration represents the latest chapter in CROSSROADS Maldives’ partnerships with local schools, aligning with its commitment to environmental and cultural preservation since its establishment in 2019. The integrated resort has welcomed over 1,800 students from neighboring islands to learn about conservation. Environmental sustainability is woven into every aspect of CROSSROADS Maldives, contributing to its Green Globe Certification in 2023.
Michael Marshall, CEO of S Hotels & Resorts, expressed delight at the MoU, emphasizing the commitment to protecting the local environment and supporting the Maldivian people. The collaboration is expected to provide technical assistance, in-kind support, and engage in outreach programs for public education and awareness.
Deputy Minister Hassan Mohamed highlighted the significance of awareness and community engagement in preserving the Maldives’ biodiversity. Initiatives like the MoU underscore positive steps toward building a more aware and resilient community.
The OECMs project aligns with S Hotels & Resorts’ broader commitment to being a nature-based solution organization. It is in line with COP 28 directives aiming to protect marine ecosystems and increase key biodiversity areas by 30% by 2030.
