India has claimed the top spot in contributing to the Maldives’ tourism scene in 2023, as per the recent data from the Maldives Ministry of Tourism. Hosting an impressive 209,198 tourists, India has retained its position as the primary source of visitors, even though there’s a slight drop from the previous year’s count of 241,369 Indian tourists in 2022. This dip doesn’t overshadow the consistent attraction the Maldives holds for travelers from the subcontinent.
Following closely, Russia secured the second position with 209,146 tourists, and China contributed 187,118 visitors to the tropical paradise. The United Kingdom and Germany rounded out the top five source countries, with 155,730 and 135,090 tourists, respectively.
Overall, the Maldives celebrated a record-breaking 1.87 million tourists in the past year, reinforcing its status as a sought-after global travel destination. December 2023 stood out as the month with the highest influx of tourists, hitting 194,690 arrivals. Notably, on December 23, the Maldives experienced the peak of tourist arrivals, hosting an impressive 8,054 visitors on that day.
Looking forward, the government aims to attract two million tourists in the current year. As of the end of 2023, the country boasted 61,650 operational tourist beds across various accommodation types. This includes 43,279 beds in resorts, 1,940 in hotels, 13,657 in guesthouses, and 2,774 in safari accommodations, showcasing diverse options for visitors seeking an unforgettable Maldivian experience.
