Tourist arrivals in the Maldives saw a significant increase at the end of 2023, with a 12% rise compared to the previous year, according to Maldives Immigration.
Originally hoping to attract 1.8 million tourists in 2023, the Maldives not only met but surpassed this goal, hosting a total of 1,878,539 visitors. This marks a substantial increase from the 1,675,303 tourists in 2022.
On average, 6,280 tourists visited daily, with the busiest day reaching a peak of 8,054 visitors. Even on the quietest day, the country hosted 4,967 tourists, based on immigration statistics. December alone saw a strong presence of tourism, with 194,691 tourists choosing the Maldives for their holiday.
With the tourism sector flourishing, the government has set an ambitious goal for 2024, aiming to attract 2 million tourists.
Currently, the Maldives has 1,145 operational tourist accommodations with a bed capacity exceeding 61,750. The tourism minister has announced plans to add 12 to 15 new resorts in the coming year, improving the country’s tourism infrastructure.
