The Maldives is off to an impressive start in the new year, experiencing a notable uptick in tourism with over 50,000 visitors in the initial nine days. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the country is witnessing an average of 5,665 tourist arrivals per day, indicating a strong recovery for the sector.
The previous year, 2023, concluded on a positive note for Maldivian tourism, marking its highest-ever influx with 1.8 million visitors. This year, the government aims to attract 2 million tourists, and early indicators are promising. The first nine days of the year saw 50,983 tourists arriving in the Maldives, showcasing a 6.4% increase compared to the same period last year (47,931 visitors), and a significant rise from the 43,079 tourists in 2022.
The Maldives remains a global tourist magnet, with Russia leading in the number of visitors. In the initial nine days of the year, 7,601 Russian tourists visited, closely followed by 7,204 from Italy. Other top contributing countries include India (3,791 visitors), the United Kingdom (3,753), and Germany (3,178). The United States, China, France, Kazakhstan, and Saudi Arabia also rank among the top ten countries with the highest tourist numbers.
A standout moment in this year’s tourist arrivals was on January 2nd, recording a historic high of 6,640 visitors in a single day. On average, tourists spend 8.1 days in the Maldives, enjoying its renowned beaches, resorts, and marine life.
These figures signal positive growth for the Maldivian tourism industry, a vital component of the nation’s economy.
