Maldives Parliament has approved two important bills concerning workers’ rights.
The first bill, the Occupational Health and Safety Bill, received 67 votes in favor, while the second one, the Industrial Relations Bill, secured 68 votes of approval.
The Industrial Relations Bill, proposed by MP Ibrahim Shareef on behalf of the previous administration, is aimed at establishing a legal framework for registering workers’ unions. The bill aligns with the recommendations put forth by the Maldives Trade Union Congress (MTUC).
In November 2022, MP Ahmed Abdulla introduced the Occupational Safety and Health Bill, which focuses on ensuring the safety of employees at work and fostering a fair and secure work environment. The bill also includes penalties for any party found responsible for violating workers’ safety.
