In a significant move to tackle housing challenges in the Maldives, the President has decided to create a special category for social housing dedicated to local employees in the tourism sector.
This decision follows thorough discussions in the Cabinet, where the Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development submitted a proposal that was carefully reviewed.
This announcement is particularly welcomed by workers in the tourism sector, who have consistently stressed the need for inclusion in government schemes, given the sector’s substantial contribution to the country’s income.
The proposal suggests dedicating a portion of the planned housing development to urban centers and social housing projects across the nation. Additionally, it proposes allowing local employees working far from their home islands to apply for low-rent Council Housing if such initiatives are implemented.
Acknowledging housing as one of the most critical issues in the Maldives, the government is actively working to address the problem. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has assured the public that he aims to resolve this issue by the end of his term. The government has initiated the reclamation of Fushidhigarufalhu, allocating it for an island named Rasmale’, primarily to tackle housing challenges.
