President Mohamed Muizzu has launched an extensive project aimed at transforming the Velana International Airport and its surrounding economic zone to accommodate 25 million passengers. The inauguration ceremony took place at Dharubaaruge last Thursday, with Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Cabinet members, and senior government officials in attendance.
This initiative marks the commencement of a 20-year plan for the airport, according to President Muizzu. He expressed that the project aligns with the aspirations of every Maldivian citizen and emphasized its concurrent development with the previous phase. The original capacity goal of 7 million passengers is now set to increase to 25 million upon completion.
Over the next decade, the project will involve relocating the seaplane terminal, enhancing the domestic terminal, and transforming Funadhoo Island into a financial hub. President Muizzu envisions the construction of bridges connecting Funadhoo, Malé, Hulhulé, and Hulhumalé, fostering overall development.
In addition to the passenger-related improvements, the project aims to increase fuel storage to 100 million liters, adhere to EU safety standards, and modernize the domestic terminal with improved services. Specialized terminals for low-cost carriers and jets, expanded parking facilities, a substantial cargo terminal, water runways, and the establishment of an economic zone in Funadhoo are also integral components of the plan, offering significant business opportunities.
As the first phase nears completion, Velana International Airport is poised to provide a transformed air travel experience for the Maldives, extending beyond mere passenger accommodations to encompass a comprehensive enhancement of infrastructure and economic prospects.
