STELCO has revealed its plan to bring battery-powered electricity to at least five islands by the end of the year. During the celebration of STELCO’s 74th anniversary, Managing Director Hussain Fahmy highlighted the company’s progress in renewable energy, in line with the government’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality in the Maldives by 2030.
Fahmy detailed the plans to implement renewable energy projects in Kaafu Atoll, Alifu Alifu Atoll, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, and Vaavu Atoll. The initial phase aims to provide 12 hours of electricity through battery storage, with potential expansion to more islands in the future.
Additionally, Fahmy announced STELCO’s commitment to enhancing its capacity to meet electricity needs in the Greater Male’ Region through the Sixth Power Development Project. This initiative includes the installation of hybrid generators, some running on diesel alone. This move reflects STELCO’s ongoing efforts to adopt environmentally sustainable practices by prioritizing the integration of renewable energy sources into its operations.
