State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has transformed the outdated powerhouse in V. Felidhoo with a new state-of-the-art power plant, providing a welcomed upgrade for the island residents who endured 30 years of noise pollution.
The official unveiling by Hussain Fahmy, the Managing Director of STELCO, on February 1st, marked a significant moment for the island community. During the ceremony, Fahmy emphasized the plant’s advanced features, particularly its modern design aimed at reducing engine noise.
Notable improvements include the incorporation of a fire extinguishing system, on-site employee accommodations, and a dedicated training hall for staff development. Fahmy also announced plans for a customer service building to enhance service delivery to residents.
The Felidhoo Island Council expressed relief at the decommissioning of the old power plant’s generators, which had been a source of inconvenience due to noise and emissions. The introduction of the new power plant is expected to address these issues and create a more pleasant living environment for locals.
Originally commissioned in 1994 as a public utility with a 25 kW generator, the previous power station in Felidhoo came under STELCO’s management in 2014. Efforts to improve service provision began in response to the growing demand for electricity.
The upgrades, including generators with capacities of 304 kW, 250 kW, and 500 kW, have significantly strengthened the island’s power infrastructure, raising the overall capacity to 1,054 kW. This expansion reflects STELCO’s commitment to meeting the evolving energy needs of the local community.
