There’s a buzz on social and local media about Indian tourists canceling their holiday plans to the Maldives. The situation seems to have escalated following some not-so-friendly comments made by high-ranking Maldivian officials about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi had recently visited Lakshadweep, an Indian union territory, to boost tourism.
After Modi’s visit, there were speculations that India might be trying to impact the Maldivian tourism industry by promoting a similar tropical island nation situated between the Maldives and India. The situation worsened when some Maldivian officials made derogatory remarks, and it gained momentum as several notable Indian celebrities endorsed Lakshadweep. Simultaneously, there’s an online campaign by Indian netizens calling for a boycott of Maldives tourism.
In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official statement acknowledging the derogatory remarks against foreign leaders. The government expressed its awareness and emphasized its commitment to taking appropriate action.
