On Monday, President Mohamed Muizzu officially opened the new cargo terminal at Velana International Airport, a significant development project he recently announced. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef and other senior government officials.
After the formal opening, President Muizzu conducted inspections at the newly inaugurated cargo terminal. This terminal is part of a larger initiative to expand Velana International Airport, aiming to accommodate up to 25 million tourists annually.
One major aspect of this expansion project was the construction of the new cargo terminal, designed to handle three times the cargo compared to the previous facility. The previous terminal had a capacity of 50,000 tonnes, and with the addition of the new terminal, this capacity has now increased to a total of 120,000 tonnes per year.
The new cargo terminal boasts environmentally friendly vehicles and updated amenities to enhance its operational efficiency. Additionally, a three-story office building, providing 55 office spaces for airlines and brokers, is situated within the new cargo terminal complex. This development is a significant step towards modernizing and improving the infrastructure at Velana International Airport.
