Dr. Aishath Shiham, the Minister of Social and Family Development in the Maldives, has introduced a new loan program of MVR 100 million aimed at supporting women entrepreneurs. The announcement was made during the launch of the ‘Hiyala Weekend Market,’ a dedicated space for women to showcase and sell their products.
The initiative, a fulfillment of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s promise, is being hailed as a significant boost for women in business. Minister Aishath Shiham emphasized that the realization of this promise serves as a substantial encouragement for women entrepreneurs. She pointed out that the impact of this initiative extends beyond individual entrepreneurs, holding the potential to contribute to sustainable living for families and overall societal prosperity.
Highlighting the importance of family contentment, Minister Aishath Shiham referred to international research demonstrating the positive influence of a woman’s happiness on her family’s well-being. This underscores the government’s belief in the need to empower women, not only for their individual benefit but also for the health and happiness of the broader community.
To demonstrate its commitment, the government plans to disburse the MVR 100 million loan specifically for women soon, with a small business loan also in the pipeline. The minister reiterated the President’s commitment to fulfilling key promises that enable women to lead fulfilling and dignified lives.
Encouraging women to seize these opportunities, the minister announced that the Hiyala Weekend Market, situated in the Container Park area of Hulhumale’s first phase, will be open every weekend from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm. It aims to provide a lively space for women to engage in commerce and community building.
